Cache Hunting with Large Loops return to top

Main Points

1- Cache hunting detectors and loops are designed to go deeper for LARGER targets and do not necessarily go deeper or single coin sized objects.

2- Larger loops cover more ground with each sweep and do a better job hunting in highly mineralized soil than smaller loops.

3- Large loops should ONLY be used in the All Metal Mode.

4- The user should dig ALL targets.

Cache Hunting Detectors and loops are designed to find deeper and LARGER TARGETS, not

necessarily for coin sized objects. A 15" loop, for example could be used for hunting coins, but

would probably not go much deeper than a .950 coin on single coin. However, it WILL go deeper

on a larger target. I define large targets as something generally the size of a coffee can or a

melon up the size of a large chest. Once the MAXIMUM depth of loop or detector is reached, it

doesn’t matter how much larger the target is. For example, a 15" loop may "max-out" on a chest

at 5 feet and would not detect a Truck much deeper. In general, large loops are balanced in the

same fashion as smaller loops. Since they are larger they see more ground and thus do a better

job hunting in more mineralized areas. This may sound strange, but since large loops SEE more

ground they can CANCEL OUT more ground minerals. Thus their advantage is that they not only

cover more ground, but they detect those large targets deeper. Their disadvantage is that they are

generally heavier, more cumbersome and are not easily put down inside a hole to check out a

target. This last reason, is why the Sierra Madre is sold with Two loops. The 15" loop is for

covering the ground and detecting deeper and the .950 for pinpointing down in the hole.

HOW DEEP WILL THE LOOP GO?

This is a tough question to answer, as there are a lot of variables, including the size of the target,

the amount of mineralization in the soil, and the model of detector being used. However, when

asked, I usually say that a 15" loop will be effective on large targets from 3 to 5 feet. User skill is

also a major factor. Thus I usually say that a 25" loop is good for about 6 to 9 feet on large targets.

I have personally detected a large chest at 6 feet with this loop on a model 4900 detector. All

large loops should ONLY be used in ALL METAL MODE, without SAT, when hunting for large targets.

Beginners will find using GEB/SAT on the PRO series detectors easier, but GEM NORM is fine.

With GEM NORM, however, the reset trigger or button must be used frequently. This is shown on

the instruction sheet enclosed with the 25" loop. The SIERRA ARM SUPPORT ($24.95) helps take

the weight off the arm when using a large loop and comes included with the 25" loop. When using

a large loop with the Spectrum or Eagle it is best to use the Relic Program and take OFF Audio

Disc. The user should dig ALL targets. If you opt for the Prospecting Program change to a slow

SAT level of at least 1 (one).
